The Toronto Star – Canada´s largest daily newspaper – to implement Canada´s first CCI NewsGate system

Implementation will provide cross-media publishing system and collaborative newsrooms for 4 dailies, 16 weeklies and up to 600 users

May 14, 2008

Toronto Star Newspapers Limited (TSNL), on behalf of itself and Metroland Media Group Ltd. (Metroland), has signed an agreement with CCI Europe to implement the CCI NewsGate cross-media publishing system. The Toronto Star, Canada's largest daily newspaper, intends to replace its current CCI NewsDesk system with CCI NewsGate. The Hamilton Spectator, Guelph Mercury, Waterloo Region Record and currently 16 weeklies from the Metroland West division of Metroland also plan to implement the CCI NewsGate system. Under the agreement, TSNL also has an option to add up to 160 users at the Metroland community newspapers.

“CCI NewsGate's collaborative work environment, and multi media publishing capabilities, will ensure that we continue to deliver innovative news products to our customers," said Jagoda Pike, Publisher of the Toronto Star and President, Star Media Group. “CCI has a strong vision, and CCI NewsGate embodies that vision." The system will be installed in Toronto with a disaster recovery site in Hamilton. CCI will assist in the initial installation of the CCI NewsGate System and TSNL and Metroland will implement the rollout, currently planned for 2009.

CCI NewsGate will provide TSNL and Metroland with safe and secure storage and management of vast amounts of content and related information. Its XML repository is based on an Oracle database in a disaster recovery environment. CCI NewsGate also allows TSNL and Metroland to share and re-use content across newsrooms, saving time and increasing productivity. Pagination options include the very efficient CCI LayoutChamp, the trade-standard Adobe InDesign, and Adobe InCopy. Other functionalities that CCI NewsGate will provide include two-way integration with online publishing systems and support for Mac OS X workstations.

“In 1994 the Toronto Star became our very first customer in Canada, and now they are the first in Canada to implement the CCI NewsGate system," said Dan Korsgaard, Chief Executive Officer of CCI Europe. “They share our (CCI's) dedication to innovation and to the changing needs of the media industry."
