Lausitzer Rundschau to join Saarbrücker Zeitung´s CCI editorial system in January 2009

German publishing group Holtzbrinck extends convergent work environment to increase regional news coverage and newsroom synergies. First section live after only five weeks

November 7, 2008

German newspaper Lausitzer Rundschau, owned by publishing group Holtzbrinck, will join the CCI editorial system of Saarbrücker Zeitung as of January 1, 2009. The papers´ 13 daily editions and supplements will all be produced via the CCI system that Saarbrucker Zeitung has used since 2001. This is not the first Holtzbrinck paper to join the system; Trierischer Volksfreund has been produced on Saarbrücker Zeitung´s CCI system since 2007, as well as Pfalzischer Merkur and 20cent Saarland. This has allowed these papers to increase efficiencies by, for example, exchanging cross-regional and cross-national pages and inserts. The successful results prompted Holtzbrinck to continue with its strategy to converge newsrooms.

"After the successful start with CCI and cooperation between various newsrooms we have decided to couple Lausitzer Rundschau as well as the connected Tabloid 20cent Cottbus with their own newsrooms to our system," said Patric Schäfer, Leader of Production Management and Project Manager at Saarbrücker Zeitung. "This way, we can reduce production costs in the company even more and speed up the work in the newsrooms. To our readers and advertising customers, this means even more detailed and up-to-date information, as well as a more targeted placement of ads."

Lausitz am Sonntag, a weekly classified paper, has already published its first copies on the system in October 2008, a mere five weeks after kick-off. Until now, the paper had been produced separately in Cottbus.

"The opportunity to begin with the weekly paper, which is published in Cottbus and its surrounding circulation area, is from a technical view a stroke of luck and certainly a great chance for us to prepare thoroughly for the planned switch-over of the main sections in January 2009," said Frank Käppler, project manager.

Saarbrücker Zeitung will be able to more efficiently use the potential of their local editions which are published in Brandenburg and Sachsen (Germany). The CCI system provides a collaborative, highly productive newsroom organization for Holtzbrinck. Having multiple newsrooms work from one common database allows sharing of content and cross-team collaboration. A "pool" of journalists and freelancers can work on shared stories or themes within their own newsrooms, but with equal access to the central system. Pages can easily be created and exchanged in the system. Text, photos and graphics are managed in a common database. The current CCI server environment in Saarbrücken will be extended and the bandwidth between the two editorial sites increased.
